The New Zafira Tourer

Athletic and distinctive - Available March 2012

From the dramatic boomerang headlights to the elegant rear detailing, the new Vauxhall Zafira Tourer redefines multi-purpose vehicle style. The profile is sleek, sporty and immediately appealing.

Exterior design
The distinctive front styling with boomerang headlights, Vauxhall signature wing running lights, trapezoid grille and slim ‘A’ pillars creates a dynamic, progressive look. The pronounced rake of the windscreen further emphasises the sporting appeal of the car.

From the side the streamlined, aerodynamic lines lend the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer a silhouette reminiscent of the high-speed trains that inspired the design team. The waistline sweeps up, adding sculptural dynamism that is literally underlined by the Vauxhall ‘blade’ motif that also sweeps up towards the ‘D’ pillars.

The wing-shape of the headlights is repeated in the rear lamps, which can be further enhanced by LED technology. The horizontal chrome bar carrying the Vauxhall logo extends into the split light clusters, helping give the Zafira Tourer a broad, sporty stance and adding another premium touch.

Interior design
Inside the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer a combination of increased spaciousness and quality you can see and feel characterises the design. Soft touch and tactile materials, together with well-considered ambient colour combinations make an immediate and long lasting impression.

Newly designed front seats with extra-long travel-rails add to the executive feeling. The fascia, centre console and instruments have been redesigned, adding a natural upgraded feel.

The panoramic windscreen – standard on the Elite model and optional on SRi and SE models – enhances the airy ambience and works perfectly with the full-length glass sunroof. The result is a relaxing, open feeling.

Ambient lighting by spotlights in the door storage space and roof-mounted overhead spots is another up-market feature. This is enhanced by ambient lighting in the doors and FlexConsole rails on some models, adding yet more practicality and convenience. The slim ‘A’ pillars on the front-door windows help with visibility and increase the sense of openness inside the vehicle.

Structured for safety
Like every Vauxhall, the Zafira Tourer is based upon a sophisticated frame that absorbs and diffuses impact and protects against intrusion and deformation of the passenger safety cell. This forms the perfect basis for all of the passive systems, such as the front, side and curtain airbags, plus the active safety systems that put the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer right out in front when it comes to protecting you, your passengers and your possessions.

See your way better

The high-beam assist for the standard bi-halogen headlights of the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer noticeably increases night-driving comfort and safety. The system can use its own camera, or the front-camera system if it’s fitted, to switch automatically from dipped to high beam in response to preceding and on-coming traffic.

Improved Adaptive Forward Lighting
As well as the nine light functions in all previous Vauxhall Adaptive Forward Lighting (AFL) systems, the AFL in the Zafira Tourer also features an Intelligent Light Ranging System (ILR). In conjunction with the front camera sytem it uses the properties of the adaptive Bi-Xenon lights to extend the range of the low beams from an already outstanding 100 metres up to approximately 350 metres, without disturbing on-coming or preceding traffic.

An absolute industry first is the Topography Evaluation function that registers hills or slopes. It recognises the rear light movement of preceding vehicles and adjusts the light range accordingly to ensure the best illumination of the road ahead. Because the earlier a potential hazard is seen the easier it is to avoid, AFL+ with Intelligent Light Ranging increases both safety and driver comfort.

A talented assistant
The front-camera system in the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer has four functions.

  • Using traffic sign recognition (TSR) it reads and remembers speed limits and ‘no overtaking’ signs, displays them and signals the end of restrictions
  • It warns you if you’re departing from a traffic lane unintentionally by sounding a lane departure warning (LDW) accompanied by a sign in the instrument panel when the car crosses a line without signalling
  • It constantly indicates the distance to the vehicle ahead using following distance indication (FDI)
  • When the car is moving faster than 18.6 mph it gives a front collision alert (FDA) if a collision is imminent.

Side blind-spot alert

Especially useful on multi-lane motorways, the side blind spot alert uses side-mounted sensors to check if there’s an obstructing vehicle in the inner or outside lane when you want to pull over. It continually monitors the blind spots on both sides and lights an LED in the inner or outer rear view mirror when a vehicle is in this area. If the indicator is used when a vehicle is in this problem zone the LED flashes and you hear a warning.

Adaptive cruise control
The adaptive cruise control (ACC) of the Vauxhall Zafira Tourer maintains the selected speed or gap you set to the vehicles ahead. The front radar sensor in the lower grille detects distance and closing speed and the desired speed and following gap is indicated in the driver information centre (DIC).

ACC works at speeds over 30 mph. When closing in, the brakes automatically intervene to decelerate the vehicle to maintain the gap. The automatic brake intervention works down to 18 mph. If the preceding vehicle decelerates to lower speeds, you hear a chime and an icon pops up in the instrument cluster to warn the driver that they need to take control of the vehicle. To come to a complete standstill, you have to apply the brake.

Cruise control with speed limiter

While cruise control is practical in fluid traffic such as on a motorway, cruise control with speed limiter can also be used in town and in dense traffic. The speed limiter function allows you to set a maximum speed up from 18 mph for the vehicle, helping you comply with speed limits.

You can override the speed limit with ‘kickdown’ – a warning is displayed in the DIC; the speed limiter function is automatically reactivated after any deceleration or braking, bringing the vehicle below the selected speed limit by reducing torque.
